스트레인 게이지 카트리지는 다른 카트리지들 (moving magnet, moving coil, or moving iron)들과 근본적으로 다릅니다. 다른 카트리지 제품들은 작은 발전기들로써 어떤 움직임을 넣으면 그것이 에너지 형태로 변환되는 것입니다. 매우 작은 전압만이 증폭되어서 스피커로 전달됩니다.
여기서 다른 종류 카트리지를 설명하는 핵심적인 단어는 움직임 입니다. 다른 모든 카트리지는 스타일러스와 캔티레버의 질량을 움직여야합니다. 이런방식은 발전기와 같이 끊임 없이 질량의 움직임을 만들어야 신호가 만들어집니다. 하지만 스트레인 게이지에서는 이런 질량이 없습니다. 그래서 스타일러스가 더 빨리 움직일수 있게 하고 레코드의 그루브를 더 잘 읽어 낼수 있습니다. 스트레인 게이지에서 움직임은 전류의 변화로 표현이 됩니다.
그렇기 때문에 아래와 같은 이상적인 특성을 보여줍니다.
음질 열화의 기본인 RIAA가 근본적으로 필요없습니다. 레코드와 여러분의 앰프사이에는 오직 매우 깨끗한 라인스테이지 1개만이 존재합니다. (기존에는 최소 승압회로, RIAA, 게인스테이지 이렇게 복잡한 과정을 거쳐야했기때문에 매우 작은 미세 신호의 감쇄가 발생합니다.)
RIAA는 속도를 감지하는 방식인 마크네틱을 사용하는 카트리지에는 모두 필요합니다. (MC, MM, MI) 하지만 스트레인 게이지는 치환장치이기때문에 자동으로 RIAA EQ가 아무런 장치 없이 보정됩니다. 더욱 적은 부품과 과정을 거칠수록 오디오 시그널은 더욱 원음에 가깝기 때문에 매우 깨끗하고 왜곡이 적은 신호를 재생할수 있습니다. Frequency response, DC to 70 Khz (rumble filter at 12 Hz.) 의 광대역을 보여주고 미세신호의 과도한 증폭으로 인해서 오는 험을 근본적으로 차단하실수 있습니다. 기존의 MM, MC형태의 바늘이 온도감은 높지만 CD와는 달리 저역이 느리고 윤곽이 없거나 중고역이 닫혀있는 느낌을 strain gauge 카트리지에서는 느끼실수 없습니다.
기존에 사용하시던 모든 톤암, 톤암 케이블등과 100% 호환이 가능하기때문에 카트리지만 교체하실수 있습니다.
사용자가 바늘을 취향에 맞게 교체할수 있습니다. Sound Smith에서는 다양한 형태의 스타일러스를 저렴한 가격에 공급하기때문에 리팁이 필요없이 영구적으로 strain gauge 카트리지를 사용하실수 있습니다. 이제 고가의 스타일러스의 리팁이나 마모때문에 음악을 들으실때 마음조리실 일이 없습니다.
카트리지를 구입하시면 포노앰프를 따로 구입하셔야하지만 스트레인 게이지 시스템은 전용 포노앰프를 드리기 때문에 추가의 비용이 없습니다.
